Thurisaz Rune Meaning and History

Thurisaz is the third character of the Elder Futhark, the runic alphabet used by Germanic peoples during the first centuries of the Common Era. Its reconstructed Proto-Germanic name is *Þurisaz, related to Old Norse þurs, a term associated with a giant or supernatural being. The corresponding Anglo-Saxon rune was known as thorn. The character represents the “th” sound and survives today as Þ in Icelandic.

Thurisaz is therefore much older than the Viking Age. Early runic evidence includes the Thorsberg chape, a Roman Iron Age metal fitting generally dated to around 200 AD. Its historical context connects the rune with early Germanic writing rather than exclusively with later Viking culture.
