Instructions for Caring for Silver-Plated Bronze
What Is Silver Plating of Bronze and the Electroplating Method?
Silver Plating of Bronze is the process of coating bronze items with a thin layer of silver. The Italian bronze we use, composed of 88% copper and 12% tin, provides a durable base that securely holds the silver layer.
The silver plating method we employ is electroplating. In this process, the bronze item is immersed in a special electrolyte solution, through which an electric current is passed. This ensures that silver is evenly deposited onto the surface, creating a thin yet resilient layer.
How to Extend the Lifespan of Silver-Plated Bronze Items
-
Prevent Oxidation.
The bronze beneath the silver is susceptible to reacting with moisture and air, which can cause the formation of a greenish patina on unprotected areas. To avoid this, proper care is essential. -
Avoid Scratches.
Since the silver layer on bronze is thin, any mechanical damage can expose the underlying material. -
Proper Storage.
Silver-plated bronze items should be stored in a dry environment, preferably in soft fabric pouches or individual cases, to prevent friction.
Care Recommendations
- Regular Cleaning. Wipe the item with a soft cloth (e.g., microfiber) to remove dust and minor dirt. Use a mild soap solution (free of harsh chemicals) for cleaning. Submerge the item in the solution, gently rinse it, and dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth.
- Protect Against Moisture. Avoid exposing the item to water, especially droplets that can leave stains. If the item gets wet, dry it immediately. Do not wear jewelry while bathing, washing hands, or cooking.
- Avoid Contact with Chemicals. Keep items away from perfumes, hairspray, household chemicals, and other aggressive substances that can damage the silver layer. If exposed to chemicals, rinse the item immediately in a soapy solution and dry it.
- Polishing. To restore shine, use special silver-cleaning wipes that gently clean and polish the surface. Avoid rough materials that might scratch the thin silver layer.
- Prevent Damage. Remove jewelry before physical activities or heavy work. Keep items away from hard or sharp objects that could harm the silver plating.
By following these tips, you can preserve the beauty and integrity of your silver-plated items, prevent damage, and extend their lifespan.
